When Wing Chan exhibited at SHOUT Gallery in Wan Chai he introduced the concept of the art car (Porsche) carrying elements of his photomontages from the show. His photomontages are now being used very successfully on a range of contemporary cheongsams (Chinese long dresses). At SHOUT Gallery in IFC he remembers it was formerly a high-end tailor so he continues that tradition. Wing’s photomontages will be used to personalize the pockets of a range of shirts designed for both men and women. Something to suit the personality or the mood of the buyer. Wing’s photomontages will enhance the tailoring of the shirts.

In Chan’s own words:

“My life has afforded me the opportunity to experience, absorb and express artistic creations on a global scale. Whilst my introduction to the use of montage occurred in Hong Kong, my three decades in the United States provided me with access to contemporary art that had a great impact on me. My travels to other cultures has also impressed me and today I apply all of these influences to my photomontages.” — Wing Chan

“To me, New York City is for dreamers and doers. The city is an empty canvas with endless possibilities, the kind of city which embeds itself in you. Once you have lived there, you carry it with you forever. In many ways, Hong Kong is like that too. These are my towns, my homes and they always will be.” explains Chan

About the tailor

The tailor, Mr. Cheung is one of the top tailors in Hong Kong. He ran a successful tailor shop in the Peninsula Hotel Arcade for decades. As a tailor, Mr. Cheung spent many years traveling to the United States meeting his clients to discuss their needs personally. His clients included the US politician John McCain, and entertainers Paul Anka and Andy Williams and many more. The collaboration between Mr. Cheung and Wing Chan is quite unique as it brings both art and craft intimately together.

Wing’s Bio

Born in Hong Kong, Wing Chan left for the United States when he was 18 and had an award-winning career in commercial design in New York City. In 2011, Wing returned to his roots in Hong Kong to focus on his photography and photomontage. Chan uses photomontage for a wide range of artistic expression that is more grounded in the contemporary arts than in photography. Although his art is two-dimensional, it transcends reality lending a great depth and movement to the work. Chan has held exhibitions of his photomontage work in Paris, Tokyo, Kyoto, Kobe, Seoul, Hong Kong, Bangkok, New York, and Singapore.
